A weekly summary of agriculture development and production in Vietnam by VietLinh online.

Livestock:

TH Group held a ceremony to import 400 purebred Holstein Friesian dairy cows to its Phu Yen High-Tech Dairy Farm in Son Dinh Commune, Son Hoa District, Phu Yen Province. This is the first batch of dairy cows imported to TH Group's farm in Phu Yen Province.

The purebred Holstein Friesian dairy cows from the US produces an average milk yield of 11,000-12,000 liters/cows/305-day cycle, equivalent to 36-40 liters of milk/day.

TH Group's project of raising dairy cows and producing milk using high-tech in Phu Yen Province has an investment capital of more than VND1,150 billion in phase 1. The farm is expected to raise 5,000 dairy cows.

Plantation:

Ca Mau Province has about 40,000 hectares of ecological rice cultivation according to the shrimp-rice model, which is one of the potential farming methods and economic strengths of the province.

The National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam has issued a certificate of trademark registration for “Ca Mau eco rice”, thereby creating advantages for the promotion of organic rice products from Ca Mau Province. Through shrimp-rice cultivation, the province creates stable raw material sources for rice export and processing. It also supplies to the market safe, high-quality products that meet domestic and international demand.

Fruits:

According to the Plant Protection Department, if nothing changes, from now to the end of the year, there will be more Vietnamese pomelo approved for export to the US. At the same time, there will also be grapefruit grown in the US imported to Vietnam.

Currently, there are 6 types of fresh fruits from Vietnam being exported to the US, including dragon fruit, rambutan, mango, longan, breast milk and lychee.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic affected many import and export activities, from the beginning of the year to the end of August 2020, there were still more than 5,000 tons of Vietnamese fresh fruits exported to the US, with a  small decline compared to 6,000 tons of the same period in 2019.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

2020 is forecasted to be a year with less flood water coming to the Mekong Delta area. Thus, saline intrusion is likely to come early and higher than the average of previous years, affecting many fruit growing areas in the dry season of 2020-2021.

The Mekong Delta has more than 360,000 hectares of fruit trees, accounting for more than 34% of Vietnam’s total area of fruit trees. Fruits grown in this region are perennial crops with high economic values. It is necessary for farmers and local authorities to proactively take care of and create measures to minimize damages caused by high salinity and climate change.

Living and Environment:

In Ha Long City, the seminar "Managing ocean plastic waste and Preserving biodiversity and the habitats of marine creatures” was held on September 25, 2020.

The focus of this seminar was to discuss partnerships to support the development of action plans in order to reduce plastic waste pollution in the fisheries sector; share experience in plastic waste management, and build voluntary commitment to reduce plastic waste in the fisheries sector.

In the framework of the seminar, participants went to the field to experiment the use of floating materials in seafood farming in Ha Long Bay. Participants of the seminar also signed commitments to voluntarily reduce plastic waste in the fisheries sector.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

Ngo Minh Truong in My Hung Commune, Thanh Oai District, Hanoi City, has implemented the model of growing moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) using high technology since 2019. He conducted this farming model in an area of 1,500 square meters, with a scale of 45,000 orchids. The plants are grown in a greenhouse, with a system monitoring humidity, temperature, and lighting. The total cost of the model is VND6 billion.

In 2019, the first orchid crop Ngo grew met the market’s standards and was sold on the occasion of the Lunar New Year. He earned VND3.6 billion from his first crop. In 2020, Ngo continues to expand the greenhouse area to 2,500 square meters, planting nearly 80,000 moth orchids. His orchid garden is currently growing and developing very well. This is a small model with great efficiency; it is suitable for the peri-urban agricultural production of Hanoi City.
