The Biopesticides Seminar explored the role of biopesticides in meeting the changing SPS requirements. It was held during Naivasha Horticultural Fair 2023.
The demand for agricultural products is constantly rising with the growing population. Unfortunately, this has escalated the need for stricter SPS standards. These standards are in place to ensure the safety and quality of food or plant products so that they are not harmful to human health while preventing the spread of pests and diseases.
Meeting these changing SPS requirements is critical for both domestic and international trade since non-compliance can result in restricted market access as well as food economic losses. These regulations demand innovative solutions that balance the need for pest control with the preservation of our natural resources.
Biopesticides represent a vital component of this balancing act when embedded in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Biopesticides offer a safer and more sustainable alternative for pest management, aligning with the SPS requirements that prioritize reduced chemical residues and increased environmental protection.
To be able to meet the changing SPS requirements successfully, collaboration among the different stakeholders i.e., governments, researchers, growers, and the private sector is essential. This seminar offered such an opportunity.
