Participants of the Ukraine-The Netherlands Agricultural Dialogue in Breda

Last year the representatives of LTO visited Ukraine. This year meeting took place in Breda, where representatives of 6 agricultural sector organization came for the meetings with LTO board members. The topic of discussion was: implementation and enforcement of production standards, prevention of market distortion, and the future of the Common Agricultural Policy in the context of Ukraine’s future accession to the EU.

The discussion focused on the state of Ukrainian agriculture amid the war and the challenges of integration into the EU Internal Market. In particular, participants addressed the expected outcomes of Ukraine’s European integration, the pace of implementing EU standards in plant and animal health, animal welfare issues in Ukraine, and cooperation in combating the spread of animal diseases.

The European Commission and the Ukrainian government have stated their intention to conclude the EU accession negotiations by the end of 2028. For accession, all EU regulations would also need to be in force. It became clear during the consultations that this poses a major challenge for Ukraine. After all, Ukraine must not only adopt production standards for crop protection, animal welfare, and animal health, but also EU policy regarding nature and the environment.

The round table was also attended by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka, UNAF Director Mariia Didukh, LTO President Ger Koopmans, as well as representatives of the governments of Ukraine and the Netherlands.

The Joint Statement by LTO and Ukrainian National Agrarian Forum was signed during the Round Table
