The Jos Plateau in Nigeria stands out as a unique highland region offering a relatively temperate agro-ecological environment—an uncommon feature within Nigeria and across West Africa. This favorable climate has made it the largest center of annual potato production on the African continent, with an estimated 300,000 hectares under cultivation. From this highland hub, potatoes are distributed not only across Nigeria but also to neighboring countries such as Niger, Benin, and Togo. Despite its significance as a vital contributor to the local economy of Plateau State, the potato sector faces key challenges, including low productivity and limited access to high-quality seed potatoes for farmers.

This report presents findings from a study conducted to gain deeper insights into Nigeria’s potato sector and to explore potentail business models for Dutch-Nigerian collaboration.
