EUROPE - Belgium: pushing for a nature-inclusive earnings model

Belgium has made significant strides in adopting nature-inclusive agriculture, with both Wallonia and Flanders embracing different models. While considerable progress has been made in terms of biodiversity, soil health, and knowledge sharing, some challenges remain. More efforts will have to be made to educate farmers to provide support. In addition, more investments are necessary in research and development.

- Frankrijk: verbod op het gebruik van dierlijke productbenamingen op plantaardige producten

Opnieuw is er in Frankrijk een besluit opgesteld dat plantaardige voedingsmiddelen met dierlijke benamingen wil verbieden. Benamingen als ‘vegetarische biefstuk’ of ‘plantaardige spekreepjes’ zouden misleidend kunnen zijn voor consumenten, aldus de Franse minister van Landbouw en Voedselsoevereiniteit.

- Poland: greenhouse market, stable with energy challenges

The greenhouse companies are spread out in the whole country, there are however some regions where the amount of greenhouses is bigger. The market seems to be stable, with the 50% of the total share represented by approx. 20 entities (with more than only one greenhouse); those are the findings of the report about greenhouse sector in Poland written for the Embassy.

- Romania: striving to reduce its trade deficit in pigs and pork

Romania's trade deficit with agri-food products can only be reduced through development, argues the Romanian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Florin Barbu. He plans to revive the sector and reach a "0" trade balance deficit in pork products in a 5-year period.

- Spain: food industry calls for preferential access to water

Farmers are the ones who have been warning so far about the impact of the drought on their crops. Now, the effects of the lack of water are reaching the food and beverage industry. Besides that, Spain remains the second most visited country in the world. The tourism sector occupies a pre-eminent place in the country's economy, where the words concern and sustainability are intertwined when drought is mentioned.

ASIA - Thailand: inspection of the Dutch pear value chain

The auditor from the Department of Agriculture (DOA), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thailand officially conducted the inspection on the Dutch pear value chain from September 8-10, 2023.  The inspection by a Thai auditor is part of the market access protocol for exporting pears from the Netherlands to Thailand.
