Agriculture newsletter #6

A summary of agriculture development and production in Vietnam by VietLinh online. - 15 maart 2021

Livestock:

According to the Management Board of Phuoc Binh National Park, Ninh Thuan Province, 11 crossbred gaurs have recovered and developed well thanks to good care.

Although the gaurs are farmed in different sections, their wild character has returned with a leading gaur among them. One of the gaurs also gave birth to an F3 generation. This is a good signal and an important result of the continuation and conservation of rare genetic resources for this species.

Plantation:

Currently, the price of pepper has increased to VND60 thousand/kilogram. This is considered a good opportunity for pepper growers in Gia Lai Province to overcome income difficulties.

With the purchase price of VND60,000/kilogram, pepper growers start to make profit and accumulate to reinvest. Continuously for many past years, pepper prices have been at low levels.

The whole province of Gia Lai currently has 13,673 hectares of pepper. Of which, 12,582 hectares are currently for farming. The province’s agriculture sector will maintain a pepper-farming area of about 12,300 hectares, with an average yield of about 4 tons/hectare. At the same time, the sector will expand pepper cultivation using high technology and organic methods.

Fruits:

According to the Dragon Fruit Association of Long An Province, in the past year, dragon fruit price in the province was low, ranging from VND5,000-7,000/kilogram, sometimes down to VND3,000-5,000/kilogram. The reasons were due to export to China affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and low consumption demand.

Since the Lunar New Year up to now, the demand for Vietnamese dragon fruit from China has suddenly increased again. Despite that, the supply of dragon fruit is not much. Thus, the price of dragon fruit has increased quickly from VND9,000-11,000/kilogram to more than VND30,000/kilogram so far.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

Currently, in Phu Giao District, Binh Duong Province, there are 140 farms of all kinds, including 5 cultivation farms and 135 livestock farms.

The number of pigs farmed in the district is about 243,624; poultry is about 1,639,900 thousand. Local farms' revenue from agriculture, forestry and fisheries is VND3,335 billion. The number of regular employees of farms in Phu Giao District is 1,177 people.

Living and Environment:

With an area of 37,487 hectares covered by two types of forest, tropical and subtropical evergreen forest, Bach Ma Mountain is also located in the center of Bach Ma National Park at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level. The mountain is an ideal habitat for red-shanked douc (Pygathrix nemaeus).

Over the past few years, thanks to effective forest protection, hunting and trapping have decreased. The red-shanked doucs appear more and more. Out of 12 groups with 128 individuals of red-shanked douc living in Bach Ma forest, particularly in Bach Ma mountain has 6 groups with 85 individuals.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

At this time, farmers in Sa Dec Flower Village (Dong Thap Province) are preparing for a new crop of ornamental flowers for the occasion of April 30 and May 1. These ornamental flowers are often used for decorating public streets and projects.

With the characteristics that they can be grown and sold all year round, especially holidays, ornamental flowers are one of the key products of Sa Dec farmers in recent years.

It is estimated that every year, Sa Dec Flower Village provides the market with tens of millions of baskets of ornamental flowers for various projects. The annual revenue of local flower industry is nearly VND5,000 billion.
