Türkiye : pre-payment meters will increase efficiency in agricultural irrigation

The General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is updating the piped systems in agricultural enterprises with prepaid electronic meters in order to prevent the water shortage that is increasingly being felt with global warming.

Pre-Payment meters

According to the statement made by DSİ, the institution works to expand modern irrigation in agriculture, to provide the highest benefit from agricultural lands through consolidation works, to deliver healthy and potable water to the taps, and to protect settlements and agricultural lands against flood risks.

Mehmet Akif Balta, General Director of DSİ, stated that the ongoing revision works in Izmir, Manisa and Uşak under the responsibility of DSİ 2nd Regional Directorate will be completed by the end of the year and added that with the new system, water will be used more efficiently and both producers and Türkiye will benefit.

Stating that the project covers 37 irrigation areas and a total of 3 thousand 161 prepaid electronic meters will be installed in irrigation areas, Balta said, “Within the scope of the project, we are including 1205 prepaid electronic meters in Uşak, 519 in Manisa and 1437 in İzmir. In this context, we are also producing 3 thousand 794 hydrates. Our goal is to use prepaid electronic meters in the entire irrigation area within the scope of the project next year.”

Aiming to save up to 40 percent in water consumption

With the Project to Install Meters in Piped Irrigation Systems in Enterprises, irrigation systems on a total of 400,533 decares of land in these provinces will be changed.

In the new system, producers will have their cards loaded from irrigation unions or designated points. Then they will read that card into the meter and irrigate their land.

The project, which aims to reduce irrigation costs and increase water efficiency, aims to save up to 40 percent in water consumption.
