GİRESUN (AA) - ATAKAN ÇITLAK - Strawberry cultivation, which has become widespread in Giresun in recent years, has become a source of income for local farmers after hazelnuts.

In 2017, the Directorate of Provincial Agriculture and Forestry implemented a project funded by the Eastern Black Sea Project Regional Development Administration to expand strawberry production.

With state subsidies, 19 decares of gardens and greenhouses were created in the province in 6 years. Over 60 tons of strawberry harvest is expected in the city this year. İbrahim Çönt, who grows strawberries in Çam Neighborhood of Espiye district, told AA correspondent that he started the production of the berry as a hobby. Stating that the demand for the product increased over time, Çönt said, "I established a small greenhouse 4 years ago and started farming as a hobby. I went to Antalya and took a course on strawberry cultivation there. Over time, I improved both myself and my production."

Çönt stated that he produces hydroponic strawberries in a greenhouse of about one acre and plans to expand this area and said, "My yield target this year is to exceed 3 tons. I can earn 3 times more from strawberries than I earn from hazelnuts. I have no marketing problems. I m able to offer it to the market in Espiye and Giresun."

Bünyamin Beşirli, who makes production in the same neighborhood, stated that he started production for himself, and in time this hobby turned into cultivation.

Stating that he established a hydroponic strawberry greenhouse on an area of approximately 400 square meters, Beşirli stated that he expects to get around 1.5-2 tons of products this year and added that he sells his harvested products to Espiye and surrounding districts.
