Vietnam’s Pangasius Industry Shifts to High-Value Products to Sustain Global Lead
Vietnam’s pangasius industry, a key player in global seafood with $2 billion in annual exports, is undergoing a strategic transformation to boost value and competitiveness. Traditionally reliant on low-value, semi-processed products, the sector is now focusing on deep-processed goods to tap into premium markets. Products now include fish cakes, steamed fish, collagen, and by-products for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, raising the value of each processed ton by 15–20%.
Vietnam maintains a global lead in frozen pangasius fillet exports, thanks to the Mekong Delta’s ideal farming conditions and a vertically integrated value chain. Hundreds of farming areas and processing plants in Vietnam have earned international certifications such as ASC, BAP, and Global G.A.P., making it easier for the industry to access demanding markets like the EU, US, Japan, and South Korea.

Circular agriculture is vital for Vietnam's green future
In response to the growing impacts of climate change, the transition toward a green economy, particularly green and circular agriculture, has become an inevitable development trend, said experts at a recent forum in Hanoi.
A traditional linear economy that follows the “take – make-consume – throw away” approach to a circular economy based on the “reduce–reuse–recycle” model enables the optimisation of resources, reduces pollution, lowers production costs, and drives innovation and efficiency in agricultural production.
