SUMMARY

  • Despite the war and economic challenges, Ukraine remains one of Europe’s leading egg producers — according to a report by Petro Pyvovar and Oleksandr Rozhkov from Polissya National University for Kyiv School of Economics, developed within the Eurointegration 1.0 initiative.
  • The production of chicken eggs is a key segment of Ukraine’s agricultural sector, supporting both domestic demand and export opportunities. Eggs are an affordable source of protein and a staple food item.
  • Before the war, Ukraine produced up to 19.6 billion eggs annually. In 2023, production dropped to 11.4 billion — the lowest level in 20 years — due to the war and the loss of facilities in the eastern and southern regions.
  • Production has since shifted to central and western regions, including Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, and Lviv oblasts.
  • While household farms play a role, large agricultural enterprises provide the bulk of the commercial supply.
  • Feed accounts for up to 80% of production costs.
  • Although exports have declined, a shift toward EU markets is helping to offset losses.
  • Industry leaders include vertically integrated companies such as Yasensvit and AVANGARDCO, several of which rank among the top 30 egg producers in Europe.
