This report outlines the fact-finding mission conducted by Aeres Training Centre in Tanzania, commissioned and financed by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and facilitated and supported from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Dar es Salaam.

Aeres Training Centre was tasked with supporting the Livestock Training Agency (LITA) in the development of an enhanced poultry training programme. This programme is implemented across eight Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes under LITA and is also used by several private TVETs.
To fulfil this assignment, Aeres conducted a comprehensive desk study on Tanzania’s poultry industry and reviewed the current animal husbandry curriculum, with a focus on poultry, as used in the TVET institutes. Aeres also engaged with a wide range of stakeholders in the poultry sector, arranging preparatory meetings ahead of its visit to Tanzania.

During the field mission, the Netherlands Embassy organised a launch meeting that brought together representatives from TVET institutes, universities, financial institutions, poultry farmers, supply chain companies, and government bodies. A total of 53 participants attended and provided valuable input on the knowledge and skills required across different segments of the poultry value chain.

Following the launch event, Aeres Training Centre visited five TVET institutes—some under LITA and others privately managed but following the LITA curriculum. Discussions were held with teachers, students, and graduates. Additionally, visits were made to Sokoine University of Agriculture, five poultry farms (both layer and broiler), one financial institution, two supply companies (feed and day-old chicks), and an agrovet shop.
These interactions offered critical insights into how TVET graduates are performing within the poultry industry, the existing levels of knowledge, and the gaps in both skills and competencies.

Based on its findings, Aeres Training Centre developed three proposals for improving poultry training within the LITA-affiliated TVETs. In addition, a short-term training programme is proposed for farmers, farm workers, extension officers, and other stakeholders in the poultry sector.

In collaboration with LITA, a preferred development approach for the new poultry training programme was defined, addressing the following key components:

  • Teacher training
  • Development of teaching materials
  • Infrastructure requirements for training delivery
  • Practical training facilities for poultry husbandry
  • Active stakeholder involvement in the training programme

Aeres also prepared a proposed timeline and outlined the necessary steps for programme implementation. This includes the roles and contributions expected from LITA, Morogoro-based teachers, and Dutch industry and educational partners.
