From April 6-11th 2025, the Dutch Embassy in Mexico City organized a mission for Dutch participants on sargassum to Quintana Roo. In this week, a two day summit for a broad public was held too. This brought together Dutch companies, Mexican stakeholders, International Financial Institutions and other international partners to explore sustainable solutions to the sargassum challenge in the Mexican Caribbean
The goal of the mission and the summit were to explore how Dutch knowledge and technologies can support Mexico to solve this problem, and what is needed to come from plans to real execution. The most discussed topics were collection at open sea, monitoring and valorization of sargassum, including cross-cutting themes like sustainability and finance.
This report contains the general recommendations for taking solutions for sargassum to the next level and has been shared with a the relevant stakeholders in Mexico, the EU and other Caribbean countries and islands.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature in the Netherlands has provided the budget to organize the mission and the summit. The team of Agriculture and Nature of the Dutch Embassy has worked in close partnership with the Secretary of Environment of Quintana Roo and the hotel sector’s initiative The Seas We Love in the preparations of the mission and the summit.
