- Ireland: farmers lead nature-inclusive approach

Farmers and landowners hold the key to positive change when it comes to nature-inclusive agriculture in Ireland. While many projects have been developed over the years and scaled up successfully, the long-term success will rely on the continued collaboration of farmers, local communities, government and industry working together to support one and other in the drive for change. It will also rely on ensuring that farmers see the positive impact they can make and equally that local communities see the positive change that farmers can make.

- Romania: a new Black Sea port

Romania will have a new Black Sea port which will take over some of the traffic currently choking the port of Constanta, especially after the start of the Russian war against Ukraine which resulted in cereal flows being rerouted through this port. The new Black Sea port will be built on Romanian territory on the Poarta Albă-Midia Năvodari Canal and will facilitate the berthing and unloading of cargo ships. At present, it takes many days to clear customs.

- Brazil: working together on transparency of products in the Amazon

The LAN team in Brazil promotes sustainable agricultural practices. One of these practices is ‘fruition of the forest’ and agroforestry in the Amazon. Starting this year they support the project “Absolutely Amazonian” in which Wageningen University and University College Dublin work with Brazilian partners to develop a system which can track and trace a product and proof/guarantee that it originates from a biodiverse system (forest or agroforestry system). The project focuses on three products: the superfood aҫaí, as well as cacoa and cupuaçu. Ramon Gerrits, Amazon specialist of the LAN team in Brazil and Max Garcia Hoogland, trainee at the Embassy in Brasília, took part in the first coordination meeting in Pará.

- Mexico: 100% sustainable barley supply

In Guanajuato, in the heart of Mexico, Heineken and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) have joined forces to support barley farmers and suppliers in implementing sustainable agricultural practices. The collaboration has resulted in significant water savings of up to 20%, reduced fuel consumption, enhanced nitrogen efficiency, higher yields, and increased farmer incomes. This partnership aligns with Heineken Mexico's commitment to environmental stewardship and their ambitious goal of ensuring 100% sustainable barley sourcing by 2030.
