Senegal is making significant efforts to enhance food security and nutrition while promoting sustainability in the horticultural sector. A key initiative supporting this goal is the HortiSenegal Impact Cluster project, carried out by a consortium of Dutch and Senegalese partners in the Niayes region as part of the Horticote program. The project emphasizes knowledge transfer, capacity building, and demonstrations. Here, we reflect on the highlights and achievements since its launch in 2023.

Training of Trainers

During the inaugural year of HortiSenegal, two successful training sessions were conducted for 13 lead farmers at the training and demonstration station in Kirene. These sessions, organized by partners Rijk Zwaan, Holland Greentech, The Salt Doctors, Koppert, and Agroseed, took place in the field, nursery, and greenhouses. In December 2023, the training emphasized the project's objectives, the significance of quality seeds, and techniques for managing soil salinity. By March 2024, the focus shifted to irrigation practices, good agricultural methods, soil and water analysis, and crop protection. Field training sessions were conducted during the rainy season at the lead farmers' sites.  Following the summer, irrigation kits were installed on their fields, and a new group of 18 lead farmers was selected to receive their initial training-of-trainers. This initiative has enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing among lead farmers and their respective groups.

Women's participation

The project explicitly focuses on involving women in horticulture. Plans are being prepared for three women's organizations to set up demonstration plots and ensure access to water. Training will also be tailored to their daily responsibilities, such as organizing one-day sessions close to home. Additionally, the initiative aims to empower women by providing them with the necessary resources and knowledge to cultivate diverse crops, enhancing both their skills and confidence. Networking opportunities will be created to foster collaboration among participants, allowing them to share experiences and best practices. By promoting sustainable agricultural techniques, the project not only seeks to improve food security but also to uplift the economic status of women in their communities.

Communication and Cooperation

Effective communication has been a focus of the project, utilizing platforms like WhatsApp groups for lead farmers to encourage knowledge sharing and engagement. These digital spaces have proven invaluable for fostering a sense of community, allowing farmers to exchange tips, share challenges, and celebrate successes in real time. Regular partner meetings, including sessions with representatives from RVO and the Dutch embassy, have facilitated smooth coordination and strengthened collaboration among stakeholders. These meetings not only provide a platform for discussing progress and challenges but also allow for strategic planning and resource allocation. Additionally, feedback from these sessions has been instrumental in refining project strategies and ensuring that the needs of the farmers are met. By prioritizing open lines of communication, the project aims to create a more inclusive and responsive agricultural network that empowers all participants.

Results and Challenges

Despite some delays, particularly with the installation of irrigation systems, alternative activities were implemented to ensure the project's momentum was maintained. For example, seeds were distributed to lead farmers to facilitate immediate agricultural activities and sustain continuity in crop production. This proactive approach not only helped mitigate the impact of the delays but also empowered the farmers to take initiative in their own cultivation efforts.

Additionally, the visits from Senegal's Agriculture Minister, Dr. Mabouba Diagne, on April 22, 2024, and February 28, 2025, to the demonstration station in Kirene were pivotal moments for the project. His presence underscored the project's significance and progress, as he interacted with the farmers and witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the initiative. During these visits, Dr. Diagne expressed admiration for the advancements made, particularly in terms of innovative farming practices and community engagement. He also offered support for ongoing collaboration, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region. His endorsement not only boosted the morale of the participants but also opened avenues for further resources and partnerships that could benefit the project's long-term objectives.

Looking Ahead

In the upcoming year, the focus will shift towards implementing solar-powered irrigation systems, enhancing capacity building, and transferring knowledge to farmer groups. Additionally, plans include constructing an innovative and affordable storage solution and collaborating with local partners. Strengthening farmer groups, improving access to markets, and ensuring access to finance will also be priorities. Ongoing discussions with ANIDA, the national Agency for Agricultural Development, are exploring the establishment of a public-private training center.

"We are proud to contribute to the HortiSenegal project, fostering a resilient and sustainable horticultural sector in Senegal through innovative techniques, local involvement, and a commitment to empowering farmers—both male and female—and their communities." — Heleen Bos

Through innovative techniques and local engagement, HortiSenegal is helping to build a resilient and productive horticultural sector for farmers and aspiring horticulturists alike. All activities under the HortiSenegal project align with Senegal’s broader need for trained farmers, especially in light of the new CAC policy.
