The 58th IFLA World Congress in Korea announced Adriaan Geuz, as the winner of the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award 2022

The International Federation of Landscape Architects(IFLA) President, James Hayter, announced the  Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award winner during the 58th IFLA World Congress in Gwangju, Korea between August 31–September 2, 2022. The award was presented to Dutch landscape architect Adriaan Geuze during an Award Ceremony on 31 August 2022. Adriaan Geuze presented also a lecture as part of this ceremony.

The IFLA - Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award

The Sir Geoffre Jellicoe Award is the highest honour that the IFLA can bestow upon a landscape architect. The Award recognizes a living landscape architect whose lifetime achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment and on the promotion of the profession of landscape architecture. The award is bestowed annually on an academic, public or private practitioner whose work and achievements are respected internationally.

Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1910–1996), IFLA President of Honour, served IFLA as its founding President from 1948–54. Jellicoe was also a founding member and later President of the Institute of Landscape Architects (now the Landscape Institute) and was knighted for services to Landscape Architecture in 1979. In 1994, Jellicoe was given the Royal Horticultural Society’s highest award, the Victoria Medal of Honour.

2022 Winner – Adriaan Geuze

The IFLA which represents the worldwide profession of landscape architecture, proudly announces that Adriaan Geuze is the winner of the 2022 IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture, the preeminent award for landscape architects and the highest honor IFLA can bestow. The jury unanimously agreed that "Adriaan Geuze is one of the most significant landscape architects in the world today." Through the broad range of built projects worldwide, his firm's works have achieved a balance of concept and practice that have changed the relationship between cities, nature, and people, and creatively transformed the relationship between urban life and urban ecology. Adriaan Geuze’s outstanding contributions to the promotion of the profession in conceptual and practical respects represent the best values of the IFLA world community.

Adriaan Geuze is the founder and director of West 8, which focuses on landscape architecture, urban design, and infrastructure projects. Under Geuze’s leadership, West 8 has completed more than two hundred projects, in over 60 countries spanning four continents. It has created innovative designs based on a critical approach to landscape architecture, planning, and innovation in the public realm, which have inspired many designers from different disciplines. Geuze has stretched the boundaries of landscape architecture.  From an academic perspective, Geuze has made important contributions to the education of generations of landscape architects in courses taught across the world.  Beyond his professional and academic accomplishments, Geuze also takes prominent and active positions within societal debates on landscape and design. All of these contribute to making Geuze one of the foremost and most inspiring landscape architects worldwide.

Yongsan Park Master Plan by West 8 in consortium with Iroje

Adriaan Geuze is also known for the winning proposal of the International Competition for Master Plan of the Yongsan Park in Seoul, Korea. Yongsan, center of city Seoul was used as US military base after Korea’s liberation and recently in 2017 returned to Korea. The Korean authority selected the master plan proposal by the West 8(Adriaan Geuze) in consortium with a Korean firm, IROJE(Seung Hyo Sang) in 2012 to transform this 243 hectare site into a public park. Groundbreaking of the Adriaan’s master plan “Healing -The Future Park” began in 2019 and is to be implemented and completed in stages by 2027.
