Changed requirements for the import of plants, seeds and planting materials into Kenya
There is a change in regards to market access of horticultural produce in Kenya. The Kenya Bureau of standards (KEBS) changed the import regulation of plants, seeds and planting materials. Check below if this has impact on your business
KEBS issued a new directive under Legal notice 78, the directive can be found here . This directive indicates that plants, seeds and planting materials are exempted from the requirement of Pre-shipment Verification of Conformity requirements (PVOC). The changes are effective as of 14 April 2020. In the previous legal notice importers of vegetable seeds into Kenya were required to obtain a Certificate of Conformity from a recognized laboratory in the country of origin. This requirement was costly both in monetary value and in time delay. The seeds and planting materials will however be subject to compliance of existing regulations, in this case from Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS).
