Ukraine views its role in feeding the world during pandemic

“To feed the world during pandemic is our contribution to fighting global crisis” - Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine.

The importance of supplying agricultural produce from Ukraine will increase during the global pandemic of the coronavirus to guarantee food security for both Europe and the world, confirmed Deputy Minister of Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine and Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka.

Ukraine is a net exporter, that is, we produce more than we consume. The Ukrainian agrarian industry "feeds the whole world" by exporting sunflower oil and corn. However, according to the Deputy Minister, foreign trade in wheat should be done very carefully so as not to lead to shortages in Ukraine. And some traditional food products in Ukraine do not cover the demand of their own industry.

"There are markets where we depend on imports, for example it's buckwheat. Here we have a negative tendency to reduce acreage in Ukraine. This is due to climate change and the structure of Ukrainian agriculture. Buckwheat crops migrate to more favorable regions. That is why we have an increasing share of imports in such goods as buckwheat so beloved by Ukrainians,” said Kachka.
