Report : Feasibility study Soft red fruits Rwanda

In 2018 Delphy performed enclosed feasibility study into development of the soft red fruits sector in Rwanda. From a short questionnaire under the hotels in Kigali, it appeared that soft red fruits, such as strawberries are hard to get in Kigali, and those available are not of a good quality.

According to a study from Kerkhoven et al., the west of Rwanda has a suitable climate for the production of strawberries.

So far only 3 companies are active in the strawberry sector in Rwanda. One company called Urwibutso is using an old variety, only for processing (jams and lemonades). A second company is using a Japanese variety, but has so far not brought anything on the market. A company called FAIM Rwanda used to have seedlings of a Sri Lankan variety on the market, but seized production due to lack of market.

According to the study of Delphy, the production of soft red fruits in Rwanda could be very profitable, but the risk of investment is high, mainly due to the lack of development in the logistics sector.
