Romania's Mega Image set to continue expansion

Mircea Moga, CEO of retailer Mega Image (part of the Ahold-Delhaize group), believes that in 2022, despite the inflationary pressures, food retail will continue to grow and in this context the company will also expand further.

“The retail industry remains on an upward trend and we will continue investments to tap into new territories and also cement our foothold on the markets we serve”.

Mega Image store chain has come to cover around 15 counties and Bucharest around five years since the Dutch-Belgian group started nationwide expansion.

“We expect consumers’ need to change this year as well, so that we will earmark investments to expand physical stores, refurbish the already existent ones and introduce new concepts and own labels and strengthen the already existent ones”.

However, he has not provided any further details. In previous years, the company announced a yearly budget of around EUR100 million.

Mircea Moga also says the retailer will continue to focus on strengthening the e-commerce segment. The company’s representatives have never unveiled the level of online sales or their weight in total turnover.

By 2020 turnover, Mega Image is the fifth biggest local retailer, with EUR 1.44 billion turnover, up 8.7% from 2019.
