Romania: local honey business less sweet in 2021

Honey producer Apidava is in talks with investment funds for a partnership that should support the company get to the next development level, and this partner could even become a majority stakeholder in a subsequent phase, explains Victor Mates, Apidava founder.

Mates reminded Apidava in the past teamed up with Dutch-held Honey International and Trichilia, in a ten-year partnership.

The company is currently controlled by Mates family and in 2020 reached turnover worth around EUR8 million, employing 55 people.

“In 2021, domestic sales dropped by 28% from 2020. Export demand went up, though, so that the gap from last year amounts to just a 8% decline”, says Mates.Half of the company’s sales are operated abroad, on around 15 markets. Apidava has in recent years also developed a line of honey-based cosmetics, which has come to top 10% in total turnover.
