Blossoming blueberry sector in Romania. Interested to be a part of it?

The blueberry market is currently one of the fastest growing markets in the fresh fruit category worldwide. Per capita consumption is constantly increasing, as consumers appreciate blueberries for their important vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content.

Blueberries

Traditional markets in terms of consumption are the US, UK, EU and Russia but nowadays the popularity of blueberries has increased in other markets as well, like China or Australia. The EU blueberry market has a CAGR of over 20%, the EU being the second world largest importer after the US.

The top-5 producers are US, Canada, Poland, Germany and Mexico. Romania has plantations, nurseries and research facilities since more than 60 years. The total planted area is rapidly increasing, the infrastructure (centralized buying and storage facilities) is improving and European funds are available for this type of business.

The main advantages for blueberry plantations in Romania are:

  • low price for agricultural land
  • lower costs for labour
  • European funds for investments in the fruit sector are still available
  • good geo location for fresh fruit exports to Central Europe, Western Europe and Russia

A young company looking for new development opportunities

Triberry Land is a company founded in Sibiu by 3 partners in 2013. The company operates a blueberry plantation located at the outskirts of the Biertan village - Sibiu County, a village famous for its fortified church (UNESCO heritage site, http://romaniatourism.com/castles-fortresses-romania-biertan-fortified-church.html)

The initial investment was 100,000 EUR, resulting into 10,000 trees of 2 blueberry varieties. The plantation has entered the production phase in 2016, in 2017 the production covered the operational costs, in 3 years time it is estimated that all the trees will reach full maturity and give maximum harvest. From a commercial point of view the company currently has a contract for selling the crop in fresh condition.

The company has currently the opportunity to expand the plantation -  doubling or tripling the cultivated area on the same location – and is looking into options (investors or partners).
