Honey Sweet bee-siness

Poland has become the fourth largest producer of honey in the European Union. According to the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR), the strength of Poland’s honey industry has resulted from the increasing size of its honey bees population.

In the years 2015-2019, the honey tonnage the country’s bees produced, depending on weather conditions, ranged from 15,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes. Official figures from the Veterinary Inspectorate for 2019 put the number of bee colonies at 1.68 mln, a 50-percent increase, compared to the figure from 2009.

Marcin Wroński, a deputy director of the KOWR, said honey producers had benefited from support programmes co-financed by the state and EU funding.
