Charitable Organization «Beremytske Biosphere» and Nature Park «Beremytske», with the support of the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands implement the project to increase biodiversity in the nature part consisting of 2 parts: Increasing the diversity of a) herbaceous plant species and b) tree species at Beremytske Natural Park after industrial logging and fires, that to big extend have been caused by war related factors like drone attacks and missiles and activities of local population, coping with difficult economic situation.
The Charitable Organization «Beremytske Biosphere» project is already working on restoring the local ecosystem and rewilding of former agricultural land.
Location: Chernigiv region, Ukraine
Project component 1 - forest
The forest part of the project is designed to increase the number of tree species that should be native to this area, but were destroyed as a result of careless economic activity, as well as caused by the consequences of war. For this purpose, two plots of 8 and 15 hectares were selected (geolocation one ; geolocation two)
It is expected that increasing the quantity and quality of tree species in the natural park will influence the development of a multi-level forest ecosystem and increase the carrying capacity of the environment for grazing herbivores.
The project activities:
First, the selected areas will be fenced off to prevent young trees from being eaten by wild animals, the next step is soil preparation and the last step is planting seedlings of five tree species.
- Work has been carried out to clear the areas of fallen trees.
- Soil preparation is also ongoing.
- The fence has been repaired, supporting piles and gates are already installed.
- the tree planting is scheduled for autumn 2025 and volunteers are invited to join.
Project component 2 - meadow
The second part of the project is the meadow, namely the increase of grass species in the Park. For this, a plot of 10 hectares was selected (geolocation pin)
The activities include the preparation of the soil on the selected area:
- Clearing the area of extra shrubs and invasive plant species.
- Application of the organic fertilizers, namely the manure from the animals of nature park.
- Sowing different varieties of herbs.
Increase in the quantity and quality of herbaceous plant species in the park will affect the development of the plain ecosystem and increase the carrying capacity of the environment for herbivores. Increasing soil fertility through the planting of siderates and the introduction of organic fertilizers obtained from our own animals will also keep moisture in the soil and better vegetation during dry weather.
2025.10.29 - visit of the Embassy team
