More than Manure: Opportunities for Dutch know-how and technology in manure valorisation in the Colombian pig and poultry sector

Would you like to know more about manure valorisation in the poultry and pig sector in Colombia? LAN Bogota and the Dutch-Colombian Chamber of Commerce (Holland House Colombia) have researched opportunities for the use of Dutch knowledge and technology in this topic. Here you can download the study with an overview of the current situation, initiatives and commercial opportunities regarding the management and transformation of poultry and pig manure in Colombia. Additionally, you can find an infographic summarising the study results. Furthermore, if you missed our webinar to present these two documents you can find the link with the session recording.

Poultry and pig sector in Colombia

Colombia has a high consumption of products of animal origin. There is therefore a large and growing livestock population. The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) has counted the livestock in 2020. In total there are 126,684,389 broilers and 60,814,199 laying hens. The pig industry has grown rapidly over the past 10 years. Currently, there are a total of 6,710,666 pigs (including 200,000 sows) in Colombia.

Manure processing

Healthy soil and water quality are important for sustainability in food production. Manure processing is not a normal practice in Colombia. In consequence, no added value is given and the environmental impact of animal production is increasing. Manure valorisation (re-use or processing) must be further investigated and put into practice.

Solutions are expensive

There are solutions such as spatial distribution of animal production and more efficient use of manure by bringing raw manure to areas of scarcity. Unfortunately, these solutions are expensive or difficult to implement.

Opportunities for Dutch companies

LAN Bogota and the Holland House Colombia have researched opportunities for the use of Dutch knowledge and technology in this topic. This analysis was done through desk research and various interviews with Dutch and Colombian stakeholders from the pig and poultry industries. The identified opportunities are presented in the study document, the infographics and a webinar which you can find in the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSJJ1fQKhTQ

There is a demand for technology and expertise in the following areas:

•    Technological solutions for biomass production;
•    manure processing equipment;
•    Manure storage systems; and,
•    Knowledge transfer and research into manure valorisation.
