China adds 700 species to wildlife protection list

China has added 700 species to its updated list of terrestrial wild animals of important ecological, scientific and social value.

An Eurasian Treecreeper
6 species of the genus Certhiidae (Treecreeper) were added to the list. These birds are commonly seen in the forests and are beneficial to the control of forest diseases and pests.

The list, first published in 2000, now includes 1924 wild animal species (1028 birds, 450 reptiles, 253 amphibians and 91 mammals). China applies various categories and levels of protection for wild animals. Rare and endangered species are under key-state protection. Other animals that also need protection, but that are not categorized as rare and endangered, are placed on the list for terrestrial wild animals of important ecological, scientific and social value.

Some species were moved from the list to the key State-protection list to get a higher level of protection . Other species were removed from the list, because they no longer face threats to their survival.
