Aging Farmers and Succession
Japan’s core agricultural workforce fell below 1 million in 2026, down 4.8% year on year and has more than halved since 2010. The average farmer’s age reached 67.7 years old, while farm numbers declined further. Corporate farms and average farm size, however, continued to increase.

Japan’s aging farmers are using mechanization to extend their working lives, but the same technology has reduced younger generations’ day-to-day involvement, worsening succession challenges. With farmers’ numbers falling sharply and most producers over the age of 65, technology may ease labor shortages but cannot by itself secure the future of staple crop production.
Naphtha shock and food packaging
Calbee is restoring color to its snack packaging after black-and-white designs, introduced amid a temporary naphtha-related ink shortage, were linked to weaker sales and consumer confusion. The episode highlighted the importance of color and food imagery in packaging, even as companies seek simpler, lower-resource designs.

AgTech and Agricultural Intellectual Property
Japanese AgTech startup Eco-Pork is testing its AI-based swine management system with Spanish meat processor FACCSA. The technology automates pig counting and could reduce management costs, with potential expansion to about 50 contract farms as Eco-Pork builds a foothold in Spain and the wider European market.

Japan has enacted legislation strengthening protection for domestically developed crop varieties against unauthorized overseas sales. Developers can seek injunctions before breeder-right registration is completed, while protection periods will be extended. The reform responds to major royalty losses from varieties such as Shine Muscat grapes exported without authorization.

Japan’s cost-of-living pressures are intensifying as food prices continue rising amid a weak yen and higher costs. The government plans to cut the food consumption tax to ease household burdens, while low-income families reduce food and cooling usage, and rural communities increasingly rely on local support services.
