Why India, why now
India’s potato sector combines scale with fast-growing demand for value addition:
- Annual potato production is likely to reach about 60 million tons in 2025-2026.
- The processing market is growing at roughly at 7% a year, now at over USD 1.5 billion.
- Gujarat is the country’s leading hub for frozen potato products and value-added processing.
There is much room for cooperation on addressing challenges from seed to shelf, from soil health to storage, from processing to AI-powered information systems. Demand for organic and regeneratively grown potatoes in India is growing steadily. Industry requirements, institutional focus on sustainable production and health-conscious consumers are driving this trend.
The Netherlands is recognized in India for its leadership in innovations in the seed potato value chain. Given the potential of the sector and the strong presence of Dutch companies across India’s potato value chain, there is scope to build on this foundation and further contribute to sustainable production, reduced food losses, and improved efficiency in the Indian potato sector.
