We believe, biodiversity is the foundation of life. It sustains our food, our water, our climate, and our well-being. As global environmental challenges intensify, safeguarding biodiversity is not just an environmental goal, it's a social, economic, and moral imperative.

That is why LAN team in Addis Ababa is working on an initiative to protect and preserve biodiversity by developing a dedicated NL-Ethiopia Agri-Biodiversity strategy. This effort builds on the team’s previous work promoting healthy soils, integrated pest management, composting, circular agriculture, and land restoration.
What is the Agri-Biodiversity strategy all about?
The new strategy will provide a focused and practical roadmap to guide Dutch engagement in Ethiopia’s biodiversity landscape. It aims to align with Ethiopian biodiversity priorities, with a clearer understanding of Ethiopia’s biodiversity goals and progress under its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). With the support of an expert consultant, the strategy development process includes:
- A review of Ethiopia’s biodiversity goals and areas of alignment with Dutch expertise
- stakeholder analysis to map the roles, interests, and contributions of Ethiopian and international actors
- Reviewing of ongoing biodiversity-related initiatives that LAN Addis could lead, support, or leverage.
- Strengthening the position of the Netherlands as a key knowledge and implementation partner in Ethiopia’s biodiversity landscape.
- Deeper cooperation with institutions such as the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute to create stronger partnerships
- Recommendations for five to eight actionable areas where the Netherlands can engage effectively
One team alone can’t do it but together, we can achieve
This is not a task one team, one organization, or one government can accomplish LAN-Addis understands that protecting biodiversity is not a task for one actor alone. Progress requires collaboration across governments, civil society, businesses, and communities. The goal of the strategy is to provide the LAN-Addis team with a clear, structured approach to biodiversity-related work. This will help prioritize efforts, identify where Dutch expertise can add value, and ensure stronger alignment with ongoing initiatives and Ethiopia’s biodiversity policy priorities.
LAN-Addis recognizes that protecting biodiversity is a shared responsibility. This strategy is one step toward sharpening our own engagement and making our contribution more targeted and effective. We look forward to learning from Ethiopian partners and other stakeholders along the way.
Stay tuned! we’ll be sharing more updates soon.
