In just one year, a pioneering partnership between the Dutch and Vietnamese companies, RYNAN Aquaculture, Van Oord, and Larive International has transformed an ambitious plan into reality. Combining RYNAN’s expertise in sustainable shrimp farming, Van Oord’s skills in ecosystem restoration, and Larive’s strengths in project development, the collaboration has established a groundbreaking demonstration site in Trà Vinh, Vietnam.

This site showcases the powerful role mangroves can play as natural filtration systems: enhancing water quality, enabling circular water re-use, and supporting biodiversity. Most importantly, it is a living testament to delivering an economic business case for mangrove restoration in Vietnam and globally.
Key achievements
The demonstration site has delivered the following positive outcomes:
- Mangroves actively filter and reuse farm water, reducing environmental impact, increasing efficiency and production sustainability.
- The demonstration site is generating robust data on mangrove-driven water purification, nutrient absorption, and improved water quality, while also tracking mangrove growth and reductions in environmental impact.
- The model supports biodiversity, uniquely underpinned by a business case.
- The international collaboration integrates advanced technology, ecosystem expertise, and business development.
It is visually captured in this short documentary:

Looking Ahead: Scaling the Innovation
With strong results from Trà Vinh, the next step is scaling the model to a larger pilot site in Sóc Trăng, a key coastal province in the Mekong Delta. Representatives from all three core partners are actively planning the next phase, including capital mobilization and development strategies.
