Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan moves towards organic farming

Kyrgyzstan is almost entirely dependent on the import of mineral fertilizers, the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry reported. The ministry noted that a priority direction is the transition to organic farming.

“Organic fertilizers are not only safer for the environment but also contribute to restoring soil fertility, improving product quality, and the health of the population. This is especially important for Kyrgyzstan, where a significant part of the population depends on the agricultural sector,” the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized.

The ministry explained how it plans to reduce the volume of mineral fertilizer imports by developing its own production of organic alternatives and encouraging farmers to adopt environmentally friendly farming practices.

Askarbek Sagynbaev, a specialist from the Department of Chemization and Plant Quarantine, reported that Kyrgyzstan imports 140-160 thousand tons of mineral fertilizers annually, covering about 50 percent of the demand.

He also reminded that excessive use of chemicals leads to increased nitrate levels in agricultural products.

“We are starting work to reduce the use of mineral fertilizers — training farmers to comply with the norms when using mineral fertilizers, paying attention to organic fertilizers — manure, compost, vermicompost, etc. In addition, a plant for the production of organic fertilizers is currently being built in the Nookat district,” said Askarbek Sagynbaev.

According to him, the plant, which is being built by private individuals, will produce up to 200 thousand tons of humic organomineral fertilizers and up to 300 thousand tons of urea.
