Why nature finance?
Nature finance is defined as finance contributing to halting and reversing nature loss. This type of finance supports the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework which sets 23 ‘action targets’ for 2030 and four global biodiversity goals for 2050.
In target 19, about finance for nature, the Framework calls for US$ 200 billion annually for biodiversity from all sources and encourages innovative financial mechanisms.
The Netherlands is committed to knowledge development in relation to innovative biodiversity financing models, as explained in the Netherlands National Biodiversity Strategy and Action plan. Exploration of bilateral exchange with the UK, a frontrunner in nature finance, is part of these efforts.
Key outcomes
The report gives insights in key trends in the finance landscape in the UK and in the Netherlands, such as the UK’s policy framework for nature finance, and mutual interests.
It identifies three priority themes for bilateral knowledge exchange: scaling of investment models, landscape and catchment-level finance and high-integrity nature market standards.
The report provides a basis for stakeholder engagement to support bilateral collaboration, emphasising a whole of society approach to implement outcomes of such an exchange sustainably.
