Germany is the leading Vietnam’s coffee importers

Data from the General Department of Customs shows that in August 2022, Vietnam exported 112,531 tons of coffee with a turnover of 266 million USD, down 4% in volume but up 13% in turnover compared to the same period in 2021. The main reason was that the export price in August increased by 16.1% over the same period last year, equivalent to an estimate of 2,336 USD/ton.

Accumulated in the first 8 months of 2022, Vietnam exported 1.2 million tons of coffee, with a turnover of 2.8 billion USD, up 11% and 40% respectively over the same period last year. The average coffee export price was estimated at 2,268 USD/ton.

In general, Vietnam’s coffee exports to all markets have grown quite well, many main markets have grown by 2-3 figures.

In the first 8 months of the year, Germany was Vietnam’s biggest coffee importers, with a turnover of 341 million USD, accounting for 12% of total export turnover, up 20.8% over the same period in 2021. Followed is the Belgian market, reaching 213 million USD, increasing by 220%; Italy’s market reached 209 million USD, up 32%... Notably, exports to Mexico in the first 8 months of 2022 recorded a growth of more than 59 times compared to the same period in 2021, from 0.7 million USD to 41.4 million USD.

Regarding types, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the first 7 months of the year, Robusta was the biggest export item, with a turnover of 1.99 billion USD and an output of 1.01 million tons, up 48.7% and 20.1% respectively, accounting for 78% of turnover and 91% of Vietnam’s coffee exports.

Estimates of some enterprises show that inventories by the end of September 2022 may be only half of that of the same period last year. Vietnam’s Robusta coffee output is also expected to decrease by about 6% in the 2022-2023 crop year to 1.72 million tons. Currently, Vietnam is the world’s biggest producer of Robusta coffee and the second biggest exporter of coffee.
