Vietnam is the 5th largest seafood supplier to Japan

Data from the Japanese Customs agency shows that in the 10 months of 2021, Vietnam is the fifth largest seafood supplier to Japan, reaching more than 111,000 tons with a value of 840 million USD.

The Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan under control, Vietnam’s large black tiger shrimp products will have many opportunities to increase market share.

However, businesses need to improve the quality of their products to compete strongly with Indonesian and Indian shrimp.

Vietnam’s seafood market share by volume increased slightly from 7.2% in 10 months of 2020 to 7.3% in 10 months of 2021. Moreover, Japan’s seafood import demand usually reaches the highest level in December and January every year. This is the time when the demand for high-value seafood products is to serve the New Year’s Day in Japan.

Data from the Japanese Customs agency shows that in the 10 months of 2021, Vietnam is the 5th largest seafood supplier to Japan, reaching more than 111,000 tons with a value of 94.94 billion JPY, equivalent to 840 million USD; up 1.1% in volume but down 2% in value over the same period last year.

Notably, Japan’s seafood imports in October 2021 reached more than 150,000 tons, worth 134.5 billion JPY, equivalent to 1.19 billion USD, down 8.2% in volume, but up 9.9 % in value over the same period of the previous year.

In the first 10 months of 2021, Japan’s seafood imports reached 1.53 million tons, worth 1,170 billion JPY, equivalent to 10,357 billion USD, down 0.2% in volume, but up 3.9% in value.

In October 2021, Japan’s imports of two main seafood products including shrimp and tuna both increased compared to October 2020. While imports of squid, octopus and crabs fell sharply compared to the same period in 2020. Generally for the first 10 months of 2021, Japan increased imports of most major seafood products, while declined octopus and salmon imports.
