Romania’s low farmland prices stir investors’ appetite

The average price per one hectare of farmland in Romania is around EUR6,000, which is luring Romanian, as well as foreign investors, the more so as the European average is higher.

“In certain areas of Romania and for certain deals prices leapt above EUR10,000, but the national average stands below this value. We believe there’s a natural farmland price increase tendency, as we’re speaking of a stable asset, coveted by many investors, but we do not expect accelerated growth in the coming period,” said Robert Lisenche, investment manager with HoldeAgri Invest.

The strength of Romania’s farmland is the fertile soil, but the old problem of the lack of an irrigation system is a hindrance.

Since early 2021, more than 20 large agricultural land plots, of above 30 hectares, totaling around 1,000 hectares, have been put up for sale, in line with Agricultural Ministry data. Just five sale deals have been clinched.
