Hungary: A new salami factory announced by Pick Szeged

The new factory will boost the country’s processing capacities, which is a bottleneck in Hungary’s meat sector.

Pick Szeged Zrt. has recently announced a €111.3 million investment into the construction of a new winter salami production facility.

Founded in 1869, Pick Szeged is an iconic Hungarian company, and Pick salami is one of the most recognizable Hungarian brands exported worldwide. The company currently produces around 10 thousand tons of salami annually. Pick’s iconic winter salami is traditionally smoked over beech wood and its casing is covered in a characteristic white mold, a so called “noble-mold”.

The new factory, which is planned to be operational by 2024, will increase the company’s production capacities by 25%. The Hungarian government has contributed a unique non-refundable grant of €29.5 million to the construction project.

Pick Szeged is part of the Bonafarm group, Hungary’s largest agricultural conglomerate. The owner of Bonafarm is Mr. Sándor Csányi, who is also the CEO of the Hungarian banking corporation OTP. Mr. Csányi is a member of the board of the private foundation that the new Hungarian Agricultural and Life Sciences University was handed to by the government, along with Fidesz MEP and governmental commissioner János Lázár, and Minister for Agriculture István Nagy.
