Czechia: Grandparents Day

This year's Grandparents' Day focused on prevention of loneliness and connecting generations. In 2021, Grandparents' Day was celebrated on Friday October 1 and the following day, October 2 belongs in the Christian calendar for guardian angels. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and the Embassy in Prague support the initiative.

Central flower for Grandparents Day this year was the Gerbera, supplied by the Dutch company Dümmen Orange. The Gerbera’s were used by florists as well as by children in different workshops to create rich and beautiful flower bouquets who were delivered to senior homes. The workshops took place for the whole week. Grandparents Day represents a truly sincere festive opportunity to thank grandparents for their love, support and practical help.

Grandparents are an important social and often an economic part of the family. On top, during the Corona pandemic it is important to stay connected. Loneliness, especially with the elderly, is a risk. The pandemic reminds us how rare and unique the relationship is between grandparents and their grandchildren.
