Romania's food retailers - top 20 employers

The ranking of the 20 largest employers in the Romanian economy was dominated by retailers last year, in line with Confidas.ro data compiled by Ziarul Financiar.

Thus, eight companies in the top operate in retail, namely Profi, Kaufland, Dedeman, Mega Image, Carrefour, Lidl, Auchan and Rewe Romania, the group that controls Penny chain.

“Retail primarily means food retail, which was not hurt by physical store closedown, but on the contrary, it hired at a fast pace, followed by non-food retail. It retained its top position as it took an omni-channel approach, built reliable brands, bio products, set up digitalisation and sustainability systems.

Food retailers also came first in terms of hiring,” explained Sorina Faier, managing partner of Elite Searchers recruiter.

The top position was held by Profi retailer, controlled by Mid Europa Partners investment fund, owning a network of almost 1,500 stores domestically, with almost 17,800 employees in 2020, up 10% from the previous year.

Automobile Dacia was the second biggest employer in the Romanian economy, but it saw headcount shrink last year.

Third came Kaufland retailer, with more than 13,100 employees, up 5% against 2019.

As regards personnel growth, Mega Image posted the biggest increase in 2020 from 2019, of around 24%.
