Romanian Pet Food Market Grows 23%

The pet food and related product market in Romania overshot the RON3 billion mark (EUR600 million) for the first time, gaining 23% in 2020, a year when people spent more time at home and many decided to get a pet.

This market has been on the rise for years now, and the trend should continue in 2021, when sales of pet food and related products should amount to more than RON3.6 billion. Sales will have tripled in 2015-2021.

The good performance is also because the trend to get a pet started late in Romania, but with improvement in purchasing power and trips to Western Europe, the number of people buying or adopting a pet has increased.

The pandemic only helped speed up the trend. European Pet Food Industry Federation data showed Romania had 4.1 million dogs, 4.3 million cats and 280,000 birds kept as pets at the end of 2019.

The top companies on the local market of pet food and related products are Mars (whose brands include Whiskas), Nestle (Purina), Royal Canin, Kaufland and Maravet, market research company Euromonitor data show.
