British Columbia: Collaborations in Innovative Agriculture

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vancouver and the Agricultural Team in Washington DC (for Canada and the United States) are delighted to present an informative brochure that highlights several advanced innovative AgTech companies in the beautiful Western Canadian Province of British Columbia (B.C.). All companies included in the brochure have a specific link to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands and the Canadian province of British Columbia share many mutual values, including collaboration, inclusion and innovation. The shared history of both countries goes back decades. While not new, the collaboration between the Netherlands and Canada in the AgTech sector continues to grow. Many Dutch farmers immigrated to B.C. in the 1950s, and played an important role in the development of the agriculture and horticulture sector in the region. This is reflected in the business setting of the horticultural sector, as well as in the innovative Dutch technology that is being used in some of the province’s state of the art horticultural facilities.

Innovation in the horticultural sector

B.C. is a well-known producer of high-quality, safe and nutritious agricultural products. With over 300 commodities, ranging from fruits and vegetables to livestock and seafood, BC is the most diverse agricultural province of Canada. Farmers are increasingly driving research into seed genomics, climate-controlled greenhouses, sensor monitored growing technologies, advanced refrigeration systems and numerous other AgTech solutions.

In Canada, as well as in the Netherlands, innovation plays a crucial role in advancing the horticultural sector. In the light of global issues such as food security, water challenges and soil degradation, the significance of innovation is underlined even more. The Netherlands and Canada see a strong need to move to a circular, more sustainable agriculture. We realize that international collaboration is essential to accomplish a more sustainable future.
