A weekly summary of agriculture development and production in Vietnam by VietLinh online.

Livestock:

For people in Tan Hoa area (Minh Hoa District, Quang Binh Province), the center of the recent floods, buffaloes and cows are always their valuable asset.

According to the authority of Tan Hoa, buffaloes and cows in the commune fluctuate at around 2,500. Local farmers in this area have already accustomed to "living with floods". Before the recent heavy rains when flood water had not yet risen, local authority took the initiative to inform people to bring their buffaloes and cows upstairs to avoid floods.

After 2 floods, on recent days, along with the focus on overcoming the consequences of floods and stabilizing life, the top priority of the government and people of Tan Hoa Commune is to actively take care, restore health, and save cattle from starvation, death from cold and disease.

Plantation:

The price of rubber soared to the highest level in the past 3 years, making farmers who grow this crop delighted.

According to rubber farmers in Binh Phuoc Province, latex price began to increase sharply from the middle of September 2020. Specifically, rubber latex price is currently at VND365-370/degree (the average latex reaching 35-40 degrees), equivalent to VND13,000 - 14,000/kilogram. At the beginning of the crop (late May, early June), latex price was only at VND8,000-9,000/kilogram.

Binh Phuoc Province is the locality with the largest rubber area in the country. The province has more than 230,000 hectares of rubber. Among those, there are more than 70% of rubber for exploitation with an output is more than 269,000 tons/year.

Fruits:

Long My District, Hau Giang Province is one of the areas heavily affected by alum and saline intrusion in the dry season every year.

With the support and assistance of local authority, the model of growing green skin pomelo on acidic, salty land is implemented in this area. There are nearly 22 hectares of green skin pomelo awarded the certificate of VietGAP standard.

According to calculations of local residents, with the current growing garden and pomelo at 3 - 4 years old, the yield can reach about 20 tons of fruits/hectare. The fruit weight ranges from 1.4 to 2 kilograms, and the average selling price at this time is at VND35,000/kilogram. Each 1 hectare of pomelo (about 450 trees) can provide an income of about VND700 million/year.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery in October 2020 of Vietnam was estimated at $3.75 billion, bringing the total export value in the first 10 months of 2020 to $33.56 billion, up 1.1% over the same period in 2019.

In which, the export value of main agricultural products was estimated at $15.07 billion, down by 1.6%; livestock export value was estimated at $256 million, down 21.4%; fishery export value was estimated at nearly $6.88 billion, down by 2.5%; the export value of main forest products was estimated at $10.31 billion, up 13.3% compared to the same period in 2019.

Living and Environment:

With 250 kilometers of coastline, over 6,100 square kilometers of sea surface, 40,000 hectares of tidal flats and more than 20,000 hectares of bays, Quang Ninh Province has many favorable conditions to promote its strengths in marine aquaculture. However, this development also entails negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, protecting the marine environment is one of the important tasks that the province’s agriculture sector is focusing on.

Quang Ninh Province has invested 26 automatic environmental monitoring stations. The collected data of the stations is provided publicly for people to know and monitor large sources of wastewater, which affects the marine environment.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

Impressed with an old hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) blooming red flowers displayed at the Hung Loi Ornamental Flower Garden in Khanh Nhon Hamlet, Tan Khanh Dong Commune, Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province.

This is an old hibiscus tree that is unique in Western Region of Vietnam. A special feature of this hibiscus is that it is more than 60 years old with a height of 4 meters. The canopy is round and open at 2 meters wide. The tree blooms flowers all year round. Those specialties have helped to increase the value of this unique hibiscus tree many times over the past decades.
