Webinar on agricultural drought prevention

In 2018 and 2019 Polish agriculture witnessed agricultural drought which caused yield losses and called for support from the Polish government.

In 2020, the weather conditions in winter and early spring raised many concerns about the repetition of the drought phenomenon. Lack of snow cover during winter and scarce perspiration in March-April, which is a beginning of crop vegetation period, resulted in agricultural drought forecast in 14 out of 16 Polish regions and concern about yields by Polish farmers.

Luckily, with the May rains, the current soil moisture situation is not that dramatic in certain region, however, the occurrence of agricultural drought is still reported in 4 north-western regions of Poland.
High rainfall in a large area of the country throughout May and June 2020 resulted in adverse phenomenon – an excess of water. For plants, it is more unfavorable than water shortages, because such conditions cause plant rot and, consequently, significantly lower yields. A large excess of water is presently recorded in 7 south and central regions.

Although the range of agricultural drought is decreasing, the observed weather conditions in Poland call for a need to adapt agriculture to the climate change. The solutions focus on water retention in agricultural areas, also by soil sustainable management.

Since the topic is common both for Poland and for the Netherlands, we can learn from each other a lot and exchange ideas and best practices.

In order to learn about agricultural drought situation and government policies towards tackling this problem, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherland in Warsaw is organizing on 16 July 2020 a webinar on the topic of agricultural drought management, with Polish and Dutch speakers giving an overview of the drought situation and the government policies in this area.
