Spain to build its first salmon farm

The Spanish company NorCantabric will build in Cantabria the first modern and industrialized salmon farm in Spain with an investment of €31.4 million and creating 120 jobs.

NorCantabric expects to produce 3,000 tons of premium quality Atlantic salmon in a Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) facility, which will be built on a 25,000 square meter plot in the Alto Ansón Business Park in Riacho (Cantabria).

The plot purchase for €1.2 million has already been formalized and the works are expected to start “in February of March, 2020”. The production of the aforementioned 3,000 tons of salmon (4-5% of the national consumption) would be “at maximum” in three years. It will be a completely organic farming and the fish quality will be much higher than salmon’s coming from fattening cages in estuaries.

Spain consumes around 70,000 tons of salmon, with no production at all, moving a volume of money of €300 million. The company has set aside another 30,000 square meters for a second phase to increase production to 10,000 tons per year. NorCantabric estimates income of €20 million from the fourth year in operation.
