Spain: The Spanish agrifood sector in the European context

In 2018, the gross value added (GVA) of the Spanish agrifood sector grew twice as much as in 2017 (2.2% vs. 1.1%), reaching almost €63 billion. Including the marketing sector, its growth was 2.3% (+0.5%), achieving more than €100 billion (9.2% of the total national economy).

In relation to the EU, in 2017 (the last year available for European comparison), Spain contributed 11.9% of the GVA’s EU-28 agrifood sector, standing at 11.4% when the sector includes marketing. Spain is the fourth economy in the EU-28 that contributes the most value to the agrifood sector and fifth, when including the distribution sector, behind France, Germany, Italy and the UK. Regarding the primary sector, with a 14.4% contribution to the EU-28, it is the third most valuable economy.

In the “Observatory of the Spanish Agrifood sector in the European Context”, carried out by Cajamar, the 2018 economic figures appear in terms of gross value added (GVA) (Fig. 1), employment rate (Fig. 2), productivity per employee (Fig. 3), expenditure on food and beverages (Fig. 4), foreign trade (Fig. 5) and business expenditure in innovation (Fig. 6).

The 2018 edition of the Cajamar report includes two new features: a broadening definition of the sector including the distribution sector and a disaggregated analysis of the main subsectors presented at the end of the report as fact sheets.
