Spain: Embarking tourists on fishing vessels

In order to stimulate and diversify the fishing sector, the Spanish Government has approved a new national law allowing non-professionals to get on fishing boats and witness their extractive work.

The national Government is now regulating an activity which, according to the DG for Fisheries, responds to the needs raised by the sector and the regional Governments to have tourism as a complementary activity to make the fishing sector more visible to society.

This rule’s main goal is for fishermen to have additional income and allow the public to know their daily work, which will increase their appraisement.

The tourist will only be able to witness the extractive work and the vessels will have to request a license to make fishing compatible with the tourist offer.

There were already some regions, which had legislated in this regard, especially the Balearic Islands, where one of the main platforms operate Pescaturismomallorca.com. By now, Germans, North Americans, French and British are the ones who demand this tourist product the most.
