In 2018, Spain exported more watermelon than ever to the highest price in history

Spain has broken its historical record in the export of watermelon, both in volume and value and in the average price.

The volume of Spanish watermelon exported in 2018 was almost 862 million kilos, 128% more than 10 years earlier and 16.23% more than in 2017. The income obtained was also a record, 428.62 million euros, 175.62% higher than in 2009 and 32.51% more than in 2017. Spanish watermelon was exported at an average price never reached before, 0.497 €/kg, 13.73% more than in 2017 and 20.63% more than 10 years earlier.

In 2018, the largest buyer of Spanish watermelon was Germany, with 43.23% of total volume, paying an average price of 0.464 €/kg.

France was the second largest partner of Spain, and the one which paid a higher average price, 0.523 €/kg. United Kingdom held the third position, followed by the Netherlands, which, in 2018, bought 52.5 kilos of Spanish watermelon, for a value of 26.45 million euros, at an average price of 0.504 €/kg. The fifth largest Spanish partner was Sweden.
