Lidl Set to Continue Expansion, Open Over 15 Stores in 2019

German-held discount store chain Lidl has grown to 238 stores in Romania and continues expansion at its usual pace, 10 to 15 new stores a year. The chain officially entered Romania in 2011 when it took over the 107 Plus Discount store chains. It then continued development from scratch.

“We intend to continue growing at the same pace in 2019 and inaugurate more than 15 new stores in Romania (…),” says Lidl Romania CEO of three years Frank Wagner.

ZF estimates the total investments of Lidl in Romania in new stores, warehouses, the takeover of Plus at more than EUR500 million. Investment in a store on a plot of land the company owns stands at EUR2 million, the retailer has previously said. Fewer than 10% of the Lidl stores operate in rented space, and most of those are former Plus stores.

One of the most important projects this year is the inauguration of the fifth logistics center, set to open in Cordun, near Roman and to supply the stores in Moldavia, Wagner said.
