A summary of agriculture development and production in Vietnam by VietLinh online. - 6 januari 2021

Livestock:

Raising wild boar, goat and sika deer in Phu Long Commune, Nho Quan District, Ninh Binh Province was first popular in small households. However, up to now, Phu Long Commune has dozens of households raising these animals in large farm scale for high income.

On the last days of the year, these popular specialties of the traditional Lunar New Year market are actively cared for by local farmers in Phu Long Commune. They want to promptly meet the market demand with best-quality products.

Local farmers said that sika deer must weigh from 40 to 50 kilograms each to ensure the meat quality. Goat weigh should be about 20 kilograms each, and wild boars each should weigh from 15 to 22 kilograms.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

Only about 1 month left, shipments of flowers will leave Da Lat to different provinces and serve the need of the Lunar New Year market. However, most gardeners have yet to receive deposits to buy flowers from traders and shop owners in Ho Chi Minh City or other provinces in the country.

Da Lat Flower Association stated that the current order volume is only about 35% compared to the same period of previous years.

According to authorities of Lam Dong Province, the total area of flowers grown for the Lunar New Year crop this year decreased by about 20% compared to last year.

In addition to the lack of pre-orders compared to previous years, unexpected early blooming is also an issue for gardeners. Boat orchids (Cymbidium), a popular and expensive species of Da Lat in the Lunar New Year, blooms early, causing losses to florists preparing the flower for the Lunar New Year.

Plantation:

According to statistics from 2017 to 2020, authorities of Lam Dong Province have implemented 165 models of sustainable coffee production in a total area of nearly 130 hectares.

Evaluation of the VnSAT project shows that farmers participating in the sustainable coffee production model in Lam Dong Province comply with technical instructions given. They also apply their own practical experiences from planting, using fertilizers, plant protection drugs to harvesting and storage after harvest.

The yield of sustainable-coffee-farming model in the second year reaches nearly 4.5 tons of kernel/hectare/year, an increase of about 15% compared to the yield of areas not applying the model. This figure by the third year onwards is expected to reach more than 4.7 tons/hectare/year, an increase by 21%.

Fruits:

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, by 2020, the area of fruit trees nationwide increases sharply, reaching about 1.1 million hectares, an increase of 32.8 thousand hectares compared to 2019. The output and quality of key and advantageous fruit trees of the whole country and each region have increased.

In which, for some fruit trees, the output increases by 4-9%. For instance, the output of mango in 2020 reaches 880 thousand tons, an increase of 4.9%; dragon fruit reaches 1,360 thousand tons, up 8.8%; orange reaches 1,100 thousand tons, up 8.14%; pomelo reaches 830 thousand tons, up 1.35%.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

According to authorities, up to now, the whole country of Vietnam has built and developed 1,642 safe agricultural, forestry and fishery supply chains, an increase of 122 chains compared to the same period in 2019. The country also develops 2,991 places to sell products produced by agriculture chains.

Among the above-mentioned chains, there are about 100 cooperatives and 250 companies, including a number of large corporations and companies participating in the farming-chain model.

To promote the development of a safe agricultural production chain, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, businesses need to focus on investing in modern technology and equipment in production, processing, product diversification, and strengthening cooperation and connection with supply chain partners.
