Update: David Scott, de Democratische Afgevaardigde uit de staat Georgia wordt de nieuwe voorzitter Landbouwcomite van het Huis van Afgevaardigden
David Scott zal begin januari 2021, na de installatie van het 117e Congres het voorzitterschap overnemen van Collin Peterson, een Democraat uit Minnesota, die zijn verkiezingsstrijd eerder dit jaar verloor. Zie ook het eerdere artikel op Agro Berichten Buitenland.
Aandachtspunten Representative Scott
David Scott vertegenwoordigt het 13e Congressional District in Georgia en heeft sinds 2002 zitting in het Huis van Afgevaardigden. Sindsdien is hij ook lid van het Landbouwcomité. Het 13e Congressional District ligt direct ten westen en zuiden van de stad Atlanta. Belangrijke aandachtspunten voor Scott zijn agrarisch onderwijs, verbeterde internetvoorzieningen voor het platteland, het belang van het voedselbonnenprogramma SNAP, zorg over zogenaamde “food deserts” in grote steden en het gebrek aan beschikbaarheid van verse voeding in arme stadswijken. Ook richt hij zich op (de ontwikkeling van) betaalbare, duurzame en schonere energiebronnen en het verbeteren van de efficiëntie. Hij steunt energie uit biomassa, wind en zonne-energie, evenals nucleaire energie waar mogelijk. Scott richt zich daarnaast op milieubescherming en het verbeteren van de kwaliteit van water, lucht en natuurgebieden. Ook klimaatverandering ziet hij als een belangrijk aandachtspunt. Hij is dan ook een voorstander van herintreding door de VS in het klimaatakkoord van Parijs.
Reacties vanuit de Amerikaanse landbouwsector
Collin Peterson, de huidige voorzitter van het landbouwcomite feliciteerde Scott met de volgende woorden:
“Congratulations to David Scott on his election as the next Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and as the first African-American to serve in that role,” “He will make a great chairman, and I’m proud to pass the reins to him. As a long-time House ag member and leader, David knows very well the impact the committee’s work has on the lives of farmers, ranchers, rural residents, and consumers in communities across the country. I’m confident we’re all in good and capable hands.”
De American Farm Bureau Federation, met meer dan vijf miljoen leden de grootste boerenorganisatie in de VS, gaf de volgende verklaring af:
“We at the American Farm Bureau Federation congratulate Representative Scott on his selection to be the next chair of the House Agriculture Committee. For almost two decades Congressman Scott has worked on behalf of farmers and ranchers. His legislative experience, a childhood working on his grandparents’ farm, and being the first African American chosen to lead the committee all give him a unique perspective needed to tackle the challenges facing rural America.”
Ook Julie Anna Potts, President en CEO van het North American Meat Institute, de brancheorganisatie voor de Amerikaanse vleessector, heeft positief op de benoeming van Scott gereageerd:
“Congressman Scott’s selection by his peers to lead the House Agriculture Committee is a testament to his longstanding work in food and nutrition policy,” “Congressman Scott has been a strong ally of animal agriculture and we look forward to working with him on the issues with that impact the meat and poultry industry.”
