Spain has the 4th world most sustainable food sector

According to the Food Sustainability Index (FSI) 2017, Spain ranks fourth only after France, Japan and Germany. The FSI is developed by The Economist Intelligence Unit with the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition.

The FSI ranks 34 countries according to their food system sustainability. The FSI aims to highlight issues of concern across three pillars: food loss and waste, sustainable agriculture and nutritional challenges. It is quantitative and qualitative benchmarking model that allows for comparison between countries and pillars, thus contributing to the shift towards more sustainable food systems.

The Spanish sector gets a score of 70.4 out of 100, standing out specially in terms of food loss and waste.
