Romania: workforce shortage in restaurants

Sphera Franchise Group, owner of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell franchises, brought 112 workers from Sri Lanka to Romania in the first half of 2021 to set off the domestic workforce shortage.

The pandemic has put additional pressure on the hospitality industry as many employees decided to switch to other fields. As a result, in the first half of 2021, the group continued its foreign personnel hiring project, say Sphera Franchise group representatives.

The group, a major player on Romania’s restaurant market by turnover and number of units, has around 4,400 employees on the three markets it operates on, with over 4,000 in Romania alone. The number is around 400 smaller against late 2020, in line with ZF calculations based on the group’s financial reports.
